This 2024 peer-reviewed article in the International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management (volume 16, issue 2, pages 253–272) investigates the factors and barriers that determine whether agriculture and aquaculture farm households in Myanmar adopt climate change adaptation strategies. The study focuses on households exposed to hazards such as flooding, saltwater intrusion and sea-level rise, which are particularly severe in Myanmar’s low-lying delta and coastal areas. Using household-level data, it examines socioeconomic determinants of adaptation, such as education, income, farm size, access to credit, extension services, information and social networks. It also identifies the barriers that prevent households from adapting, including financial constraints, lack of knowledge, limited institutional support and insecure land or resource rights. The findings help explain why adaptation uptake is uneven even when risks are widely recognised. Classed as direct evidence under Adaptation Practices and Technology, the article provides adoption-barrier evidence that is essential for designing effective programmes. It is useful for policymakers and development agencies targeting support to the most constrained households, for extension services planning outreach, and for researchers comparing adaptation behaviour across Southeast Asian countries with similar delta-based farming and aquaculture systems.
