IkanAdapt: Enabling Fisheries and Aquaculture Stakeholders in Timor-Leste to Adapt to Climate Change

IkanAdapt is a Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded project of approximately USD 4.4 million, implemented by FAO and WorldFish with the Government of Timor-Leste, that aims to enable fisheries and aquaculture stakeholders to adapt to climate change. Timor-Leste is one of the least-studied countries in Southeast Asia for climate-aquaculture issues, and its coastal and inland fishing and farming communities face rising climate risks alongside high rates of food insecurity and malnutrition. The project addresses these challenges by building institutional and community capacity for climate adaptation in the aquatic-food sector. Activities include strengthening the knowledge base on climate risks, supporting climate-resilient fisheries management, promoting appropriate aquaculture practices, and helping government agencies integrate adaptation into sector planning and policy. It works across national, municipal and community levels so that adaptation measures are both locally relevant and institutionally supported. Because direct literature on Timor-Leste is sparse, IkanAdapt is one of the most important sources of applied programme evidence for the country. It is classed as direct and is useful for understanding national resilience programming, identifying partners, and drawing lessons for other small, climate-vulnerable states. As an active project, it is also a practical partnership entry point for research and capacity-building collaboration.
