This 2021 peer-reviewed article by M.J. Akester, M. Khin, P. Phousavanh, H. Navy, K.M. Soe and B. Lebel, published in Aquaculture Economics & Management (volume 25, issue 4, pages 388–410), examines climate risk management practices of fish and shrimp farmers across the Mekong Region, covering Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. The study focuses on climate-related risks that threaten farm profitability, such as extreme temperatures, floods, droughts and water-quality problems. It documents the risk-management practices farmers use, including aeration to maintain oxygen levels, the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) for weather and market information, participation in grower groups for shared learning and support, and adjustments to stocking and harvesting. The authors analyse the socioeconomic determinants of these practices, such as farm size, education, access to credit and extension services, to understand why some farmers adopt more risk-management measures than others. Classed as direct evidence under Adaptation Practices and Technology, the article provides comparative, Mekong-wide farm-level evidence across five countries. It is useful for cross-country comparisons, for designing targeted extension and support programmes, and for policymakers seeking to strengthen farmer risk management in the region’s diverse aquaculture systems.
