This 2024 report by T. Vo, H. Le, D. Phan, A. Tran, Y. Nguyen, H. Nguyen and T. Pham, published in the APN Science Bulletin (volume 14, issue 1) by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research, describes a project working towards sustainable mangrove-shrimp aquaculture in the Mekong River Delta of Viet Nam through capacity building and partnership. Integrated mangrove-shrimp, or silvofishery, systems combine shrimp farming with the conservation of mangroves within or around ponds. They offer an alternative to clearing mangroves for intensive ponds, which has caused large-scale habitat loss and increased coastal vulnerability. The project addresses challenges including mangrove loss, climate risks and disease affecting shrimp systems. It developed capacity-building activities for farmers, local officials and other stakeholders, and created multi-stakeholder partnerships linking communities, government, researchers and the private sector. These efforts aimed to improve farm management, strengthen market linkages and support the long-term sustainability of mangrove-shrimp production. Classed as direct evidence under Ecosystems, Mangroves and Blue Carbon, the report provides a usable training and partnership template. It is valuable for practitioners designing silvofishery programmes, for local governments managing coastal zones, and for researchers studying how capacity building and partnerships can support nature-based aquaculture in Southeast Asia.
