This research project, implemented by WWF-Myanmar with the Green Environment Development Association (GEDA) and supported by the Global EbA Fund, promotes mangrove-friendly aquaculture as a means of building climate resilience in Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady Delta. The delta is highly exposed to climate change, with projections suggesting that sea-level rise could submerge roughly 43 percent of its area within 80 years, putting farms, villages and ecosystems at serious risk. Working in Pyapon township, the project supports community-led aquaculture models that integrate production with mangrove protection and restoration rather than clearing mangroves for ponds. This ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) approach aims to strengthen natural coastal defences, improve habitat for fish and crustaceans, and diversify smallholder income while reducing vulnerability to storms, flooding and erosion. The project also builds the adaptive capacity of smallholder aquaculture farmers through training, demonstration and participatory planning. It provides practical evidence on how nature-based solutions can be combined with livelihoods in a densely populated, low-lying delta. As an active initiative, it offers a potential partnership entry point for organisations seeking to scale mangrove-aquaculture models, share lessons across Southeast Asia, or link EbA practice with national adaptation planning in Myanmar.
