This 2021 peer-reviewed article in Aquaculture Reports by Yee Mon Aung, Ling Yee Khor, Nhuong Tran, Kelvin Mashisia Shikuku and Manfred Zeller examines the technical efficiency of small-scale aquaculture in Myanmar and asks whether women’s participation in decision-making makes a difference. Using data from 440 small-scale aquaculture households in the Ayeyarwady Delta, the authors apply Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to measure how efficiently farms convert inputs into fish output. They then analyse factors associated with higher efficiency, including farm practices, household characteristics and gender dynamics. The study finds that polyculture and the adoption of climate adaptation measures are correlated with higher technical efficiency, suggesting that resilience-oriented practices can also improve productivity. It also highlights the importance of women’s involvement in farm decision-making for performance outcomes. Climate-shock exposure is explicitly considered in relation to on-farm adaptation measures. Classed as direct evidence under Livelihoods, Gender and Socioeconomics, the article provides farm-level quantitative evidence with a gender dimension. It is useful for policymakers and development programmes promoting climate-smart aquaculture, for gender-responsive programme design, and for researchers interested in linking adaptation practices with productivity and efficiency in smallholder aquaculture.
