This 2020 scientific article published in Agronomy (volume 10, issue 7, article 1025) examines how recycled fish pond sediments can improve productivity in integrated fish-vegetable farming systems in the Mekong Delta of Viet Nam. Striped catfish (pangasius) farming in the delta generates large volumes of nutrient-rich pond sediment, which is often discharged into rivers and canals, contributing to water pollution. The study tests the reuse of this sediment as a fertiliser and soil conditioner for vegetable production. Results show that recycled sediment can supply nutrients and improve soil properties, allowing farmers to reduce their use of synthetic fertilisers while maintaining or improving crop yields. At the same time, reusing sediment reduces the effluent load from aquaculture, delivering environmental benefits for surrounding water bodies. The approach illustrates a simple, low-cost circular practice that connects aquaculture and crop production at farm level. Classed as direct evidence under Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, the article provides practical on-farm circularity evidence for the Mekong Delta. It is useful for extension services and farmers seeking cost-effective ways to manage pond waste, for policymakers interested in reducing aquaculture pollution, and for researchers studying nutrient flows in integrated farming systems in Southeast Asia.
