AquASEAN – Partnership for Sustainable Aquaculture is a regional partnership and research project running from 2025 to 2027, led by CIRAD with the French Embassy to ASEAN in Jakarta, the French Embassy in Thailand, the ASEAN Secretariat, regional universities and private partners. Its focus is circular aquaculture and the One Health approach, which recognises the links between the health of people, animals and ecosystems. The project responds to climate vulnerability, environmental pressures from intensifying production, disease and antimicrobial use, and ecosystem degradation in Southeast Asian aquaculture. It establishes integrated circular aquaculture pilots, such as shrimp-fish-seaweed systems, in which waste and nutrients from one species are used by another, reducing effluents and improving resource efficiency. The project promotes circular economy, agroecology and One Health solutions to cut effluents, strengthen biosecurity and build health resilience, supported by public-private partnerships and capacity building through training and MSc and PhD scholarships. It covers ASEAN with activities in Thailand, Viet Nam and Cambodia, and its launch is noted as 2–3 April 2026 in Bangkok. Classed as direct evidence under Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, AquASEAN is the flagship regional circular-aquaculture initiative in the matrix and the primary partnership entry point for collaboration on circular and climate-resilient aquaculture in Southeast Asia.
