This 2021 review article by S.M. Maulu, O.J. Hasimuna, L.H. Haambiya and colleagues, published in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, examines the effects of climate change on aquaculture production and discusses sustainability implications, mitigation and adaptation. The authors synthesise global evidence on how key climate drivers affect aquaculture, including rising temperatures, sea-level rise, disease outbreaks, harmful algal blooms, changes in rainfall, salinity fluctuations and extreme weather events. They explain how these drivers influence fish physiology, growth, reproduction, survival and the availability of inputs such as water, seed and feed, as well as the stability of farm infrastructure. The review then outlines adaptation options, such as improved site selection, selective breeding for stress tolerance, better water and feed management, diversification and insurance, and mitigation measures that can reduce the sector’s carbon footprint. It also emphasises the importance of building adaptive capacity among producers through knowledge, finance and institutional support. Classed as direct evidence under Adaptation Practices and Technology, this widely cited review is useful for developing the conceptual framework of literature reviews, for teaching and training, and for providing a broad, accessible overview of climate-aquaculture interactions applicable to Southeast Asia and other regions.
