This 2021 systematic review by Asnarulkhadi Abu Samah, Hayrol Azril Mohamed Shaffril, Mohd Fauzi Fadzil, Nobaya Ahmad and Khairuddin Idris, published in Sustainability, examines adaptation practices in aquaculture in response to climate change impacts. Using a systematic review methodology, the authors identify, screen and analyse peer-reviewed studies on how aquaculture producers and communities adapt to multiple climate hazards, such as rising temperatures, floods, drought, storms and salinity changes. The review categorises adaptation practices into themes, which may include changes in farm management, infrastructure improvements, species and technology choices, livelihood diversification, financial strategies and the use of information and social networks. It also highlights patterns in the literature, including geographic concentration of studies, dominant research methods and gaps where evidence is limited. Classed as direct evidence under Adaptation Practices and Technology, the article provides systematic evidence on adaptation practices. It is particularly useful for identifying adaptation categories when designing surveys or assessment frameworks, for understanding research gaps that new studies could address, and for providing a methodologically rigorous overview of adaptation in aquaculture communities. The authors’ Malaysian affiliation also links this work to other regional studies in the matrix on small-scale fishers’ adaptation.
