CAINA is a research project led by WorldFish with Malaysian universities, funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Government of Canada, that focuses on nature-based aquaculture in Malaysia and its potential to scale across Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Nature-based aquaculture refers to systems that work with natural processes and can deliver environmental benefits, such as seaweed and shellfish farming, which require no feed and can absorb nutrients and carbon, and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), which recycles nutrients between species. The project aims to define what nature-based aquaculture means in practice, develop standards and impact-assessment tools to measure its environmental and social performance, and map pathways for scaling regenerative models. This work responds to the need for a climate-smart, low-impact transition of the aquaculture sector, ensuring that claims of sustainability are backed by evidence and clear criteria. Classed as direct evidence under Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, CAINA is an active project and partnership entry point. It is useful for researchers and policymakers interested in standards and metrics for sustainable aquaculture, for industry actors developing seaweed, shellfish or IMTA enterprises, and for organisations seeking collaboration on regenerative aquaculture in Southeast Asia.
