This 2022 review article by Carvalho Pereira and colleagues, published in Aquaculture Research, examines perspectives for improving the circular economy in brackish-water shrimp aquaculture, drawing on experience from Southeast Asia and Latin America, the two main shrimp-producing regions. Shrimp farming has expanded rapidly but carries substantial environmental burdens, including dependence on fishmeal and fish oil in feeds, the historical loss of mangroves to pond construction, and contamination of soil and water through effluents and sludge. The review assesses current practices and technologies, including recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and wastewater and sludge treatment methods. It proposes a decentralised circular system in which shrimp culture is coupled with the production of macroalgae and microalgae that absorb dissolved nutrients, and with anaerobic digestion of sludge to recover energy and nutrients. Such integration could reduce pollution, lower input costs and create additional products. The authors also discuss technical and economic barriers to adoption. Classed as direct evidence under Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, the article is a core peer-reviewed reference for circular shrimp systems. It is useful for researchers, technology developers and policymakers seeking to reduce the environmental footprint of shrimp aquaculture in Southeast Asian coastal zones.
