This 2025 conference keynote by Jean-Michel Mortillaro, Kazi Ahmed Kabir and Simon Lévy of CIRAD–ISEM, delivered at ICFIS, presents sustainable aquaculture approaches based on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) and the circular economy. IMTA combines species from different trophic levels, such as fed fish, filter-feeding shellfish, seaweeds and detritivores, so that wastes from one species become inputs for another. This improves resource-use efficiency and reduces nutrient pollution from intensifying aquaculture systems. The keynote draws on research in Southeast Asia, including pond-based IMTA species management in Cambodia and circular shrimp farming in Viet Nam. It discusses how species selection, stocking ratios and management practices can be designed to maximise nutrient recycling and productivity while minimising effluent pressure. The presentation also links this research to the AquASEAN partnership, showing how experimental findings feed into regional pilot projects and capacity building. Classed as direct evidence under Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, the keynote serves as a learning material rather than a peer-reviewed publication. It is useful for researchers and practitioners seeking practical design principles for IMTA and circular shrimp systems, and it identifies an expert contact point for Southeast Asian research collaboration on circular aquaculture and IMTA.
