This 2026 article in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems assesses the readiness of aquaculture farmers in the Caraga Region of the Philippines to transition toward sustainable aquafeeds, focusing on their perceptions of alternative protein sources. Feed is usually the largest operating cost in aquaculture and conventional fishmeal-based feeds raise both economic and environmental concerns. The study links feed choices to climate risk by noting how extreme weather, water-quality problems and rising temperatures cause fish stress and mortality, making efficient and resilient feed management increasingly important. It explores farmers’ awareness, attitudes and willingness to adopt alternative proteins such as insect meal, plant-based ingredients or locally available by-products, and identifies barriers including cost, availability, perceived performance and lack of technical information. The findings help explain the social and practical conditions that must be in place for new feed technologies to be taken up. Classed as direct evidence under Adaptation Practices and Technology, the article offers very recent Philippine aquaculture evidence with a climate-risk dimension. It is useful for feed researchers, extension services and policymakers designing programmes to promote sustainable feeds, and for linking feed innovation with broader climate adaptation and mitigation goals in the sector.
