This 2021 peer-reviewed article in Frontiers in Marine Science investigates perceived vulnerability and climate change impacts on small-scale fisheries in Davao Gulf, Philippines. Using community-based surveys and consultations, the study captures fishers’ perceptions of environmental change, including hotter temperatures, changing weather patterns, coral bleaching, disease and the spread of invasive species. Fishers report how these changes affect their catches, fishing grounds, safety at sea and household incomes. The study links perceptions to vulnerability by assessing exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity within the fishing communities. It identifies a range of measures that could reduce vulnerability, such as improving access to credit, building capacity through training, developing supplemental livelihoods and providing timely climate and weather information. Classed as adjacent evidence under Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, the article focuses on capture fisheries but offers insights relevant to coastal aquaculture and livelihood diversification programmes. It provides useful community-level vulnerability evidence for Mindanao and is valuable for local governments, fisheries agencies and NGOs designing climate-resilience interventions in coastal communities. It also demonstrates how perception-based research can complement biophysical data in understanding climate risks for small-scale fishers.
