This SEARCA/CChAM study by Dang Minh Man, Nguyen Van Kien, Tran Duc Dung, Trinh Phuoc Nguyen and Trinh Van Vu Lin, conducted between 2017 and 2022 under the Strategic Fund for Research and Training (SFRT), examines the livelihood vulnerability and adaptability of coastal communities to saltwater intrusion and droughts in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The outputs include Discussion Paper Series 2021 No. 4 and Policy Brief 2022 No. 2. The Mekong Delta faces increasingly severe salinity intrusion and freshwater shortages, driven by sea-level rise, reduced upstream flows and drought, which threaten rice farming, aquaculture and domestic water supply. The study assesses how these hazards affect coastal livelihood systems and evaluates households’ vulnerability and capacity to adapt, including through shifts in land use, farming systems and water management. It also identifies policy responses that can support adaptation, such as improved land and water management, infrastructure and support for livelihood transitions. Classed as direct and adjacent evidence under Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, the study is highly relevant to salinity and Mekong systems. It is useful for policymakers in Viet Nam, for researchers studying salinity adaptation, and for comparing delta adaptation strategies across Southeast Asia.
