Climate change risks to marine ecosystems and fisheries, edited by J.L. Blanchard and C. Novaglio and published in 2024 as FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper No. 707, presents global projections of climate impacts on marine ecosystems and fisheries to 2100. The publication draws on the Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project (FishMIP), which brings together multiple ecosystem and fisheries models driven by common climate scenarios. This ensemble approach provides more robust projections than any single model. The report examines projected changes in ocean warming and marine biomass under different emissions scenarios and shows how impacts vary by region, with many tropical areas, including parts of Southeast Asia, expected to experience substantial declines in fish biomass. It discusses implications for fisheries management, food security and national adaptation planning, including the preparation of NDCs. Classed as adjacent evidence under Climate Science and Projections, the publication focuses on marine fisheries but provides essential ecosystem and climate-risk context for marine aquaculture, which relies on the same coastal and ocean environments. It is a key scientific climate-risk evidence base, useful for researchers, planners and policymakers who need authoritative, long-term projections to inform strategic decisions on fisheries and aquaculture.
