SAFE is an EU Horizon Europe research project (grant agreement 101084549), running from 2022 to 2026 and documented on the European Commission’s CORDIS platform, that develops circular economy solutions for freshwater aquaculture through EU-China cooperation. Freshwater aquaculture produces solid and liquid waste streams, such as sludge, uneaten feed and nutrient-rich water, that can harm the environment and represent lost resources. The project focuses on recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), developing technologies and processes to capture these waste streams and return them to the feed chain, for example by converting them into feed ingredients through biological processes. SAFE also evaluates the environmental impact and economic viability of these solutions, and demonstrates them at local and regional scales in partner countries. Although the project is based in the European Union and China, it is relevant to Southeast Asia as a comparative case. Classed as contextual evidence under Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, it offers a comparative design model for a possible Southeast Asian equivalent. It is useful for researchers and funders considering large-scale collaborative projects on circular aquaculture, for technology transfer discussions, and for benchmarking regional initiatives such as AquASEAN against international efforts.
