This 2024 geospatial dataset by Y. Jiang, J. Li, Z. Zhang and colleagues, published in the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation (volume 127, article 103654) and archived on Zenodo, provides a fine-detailed map of coastal aquaculture ponds in China and Southeast Asia for 2020 at 30-metre resolution. Derived from Landsat satellite imagery, the dataset identifies land-based coastal aquaculture ponds and also captures their change dynamics from 1990 to 2020, showing how pond area has expanded or shifted over three decades. Coastal pond expansion has been a major driver of land-use change in the region, including the conversion of mangroves, wetlands and agricultural land, with consequences for ecosystem services and climate vulnerability. The dataset allows researchers and planners to quantify the spatial footprint of aquaculture, identify hotspots of expansion and assess overlaps with sensitive habitats or areas at risk from sea-level rise and flooding. Classed as direct and contextual evidence under Sector Baselines and Statistics, it provides a valuable spatial baseline. It is useful for siting circular or IMTA interventions, for monitoring pond expansion and mangrove loss, for coastal spatial planning, and for combining with climate hazard maps to assess the exposure of aquaculture areas across Southeast Asia.
