This 2022 review article by K. Mohan, D.K. Rajan, T. Muralisankar, A.R. Ganesan, P. Sathishkumar and N. Revathi, published in Aquaculture (volume 553, article 738095), examines the use of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal in aquafeeds and assesses past achievements and future needs for a sustainable aquaculture industry. Fishmeal supply is limited and increasingly costly, while large volumes of organic waste from agriculture, food processing and households create disposal problems. Black soldier fly larvae can convert such waste into high-quality protein and fat, offering a waste-to-feed bioconversion pathway that supports circular economy goals. The review summarises research on the nutritional composition of larvae meal and its effects on the growth, feed utilisation, immunity and disease resistance of various farmed fish and crustaceans. It also discusses processing methods, safety considerations, regulatory issues and economic factors affecting commercial adoption. Singapore’s food-waste bioconversion is noted as an example of urban circular systems. Classed as direct evidence under Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, the article is regarded as a standard citation for insect-based circular feed. It is useful for researchers designing feed trials, for feed manufacturers and investors, and for policymakers developing regulations and incentives for insect-based aquafeeds in Southeast Asia.
