This 2019 article by Catherine Roween C. Almaden, Agnes C. Rola, Rowena DT. Baconguis, Juan M. Pulhin, Jose V. Camacho Jr. and Rico C. Ancog, published in SEARCA’s Asian Journal of Agriculture and Development (AJAD 16(1): 93–116), examines the determinants of adaptation to slow-onset hazards among rice-farming households affected by seawater intrusion in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. Slow-onset hazards such as gradual salinisation receive less attention than sudden disasters like typhoons, yet they can steadily erode agricultural productivity and livelihoods. The study develops a measure-based adaptation index to quantify the extent of adaptation among households, capturing the range and intensity of measures adopted, such as changing crop varieties, adjusting farming practices or shifting to other livelihoods including aquaculture. Using statistical analysis, the authors identify the factors that influence adaptation, finding that economic capacity is a key determinant. Classed as adjacent evidence under Livelihoods, Gender and Socioeconomics, the article provides useful salinity and adaptation evidence relevant to coastal production systems where aquaculture can be an adaptation option. It is useful for researchers measuring adaptation, for policymakers targeting support to low-capacity households, and for understanding how salinity intrusion shapes livelihood decisions in coastal Philippine communities.
