This SEARCA/CChAM study by Le Thanh Phong, Truong Ngoc Thuy, Pham Duy Tien, Lam Quoc Phuong, Le Thi Phuong Dong, Pham Tran Lan Phuong, Vo Van Oc, Vo Phu Qui and Nguyen Van Kien, published in 2022 as Discussion Paper Series 2021 No. 3, assesses traditional rice-based farming systems as options for adapting to climate change in the Mekong Delta of Viet Nam. Focusing on Kien Giang Province, the study examines farming systems that combine traditional rice varieties with aquaculture, such as rice-shrimp or rice-fish rotations. These systems are being evaluated against climate-related stresses including drought, salinity intrusion, alum (acid sulphate) toxicity and adverse weather. The research compares the performance, profitability and resilience of traditional and integrated systems, and considers their environmental and social benefits. It highlights the potential of climate-adapted rice varieties and integrated rice-aquaculture systems to maintain production and incomes under increasingly difficult conditions. Classed as adjacent evidence under Adaptation Practices and Technology, the paper is an important integrated-system case. It is useful for policymakers and extension services promoting climate-resilient farming in saline-affected areas, for researchers studying integrated rice-aquaculture, and for comparing Mekong Delta adaptation pathways with similar systems elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
