This 2015 peer-reviewed article by Rosita Hamdan, Azmah Othman and Fatimah Kari, published in the International Journal of Business and Society (volume 16, issue 3, pages 364–385), analyses the effects of climate change on aquaculture production performance in Malaysia using environmental performance analysis. The study focuses on brackishwater pond and cage aquaculture, two important production systems in the country. It applies efficiency-measurement techniques to evaluate how farms convert inputs into outputs while accounting for environmental factors, including climate variability. By incorporating climate-related variables, the authors assess how changes in temperature, rainfall and related conditions influence production performance and environmental efficiency across farms and regions. The results provide insights into which systems or locations are more sensitive to climate variability and where improvements in management could enhance both productivity and environmental outcomes. Classed as direct evidence under Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, the article provides country-specific quantitative evidence for Malaysia, which is relatively scarce in the regional literature. It is useful for researchers seeking empirical methods to link climate and production performance, for policymakers prioritising support to vulnerable systems, and as a baseline for comparing more recent assessments of Malaysian aquaculture under changing climatic conditions.
